What the day is

Yama visits his sister Yamuna and is fed — the god of death, at a family table.

The story

The story the day keeps.

1 / 1Yamuna feeds her brotherTurn ↻

Yama, lord of dharma, went to visit his sister Yamuna on this day. She welcomed him with a tilak and a meal, and he blessed the day: a brother who visits his sister on it and eats from her hand is honoured. So the day is also called Yama Dvitiya.

Yama Dvitiya, as the Puranic vrata tradition records it.

The days around it

How to keep Bhai Dooj

Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 2.

Call or visit an elder brother or sister today; if you have none, an elder who has looked out for you.

Light a lamp, or say a word of thanks, for a sibling or for someone who has been one to you.

Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.

How India keeps it

  • North India

Bhai Dooj: the sister marks her brother's forehead with tilak and feeds him.

  • Maharashtra and Bengal

Bhau Beej in Maharashtra; Bhai Phonta in Bengal, where the sister's blessing is spoken over the tilak.
