The portal of Festivals
Turn a card. Answer all three rightly and this portal is sealed in your sky. New riddles every morning.
As the Lord rests these four months, may you find a steadier, quieter flame within.
यथा दीपो निवातस्थो नेङ्गते सोपमा स्मृता योगिनो यतचित्तस्य युञ्जतो योगमात्मनः
yathā dīpo nivāta-stho neṅgate sopamā smṛtā / yogino yata-cittasya yuñjato yogam ātmanaḥ
Its meaning
"As a lamp in a windless place does not flicker": that is the comparison remembered for the yogi of controlled mind, practising the yoga of the Self.

Treating Chaturmas as a season of bad luck. It is a season of inward work.

A gentle reminder three days before each festival and on its morning, with its timing for your city.
The eleventh day of the bright half of Ashadha, with the rains settling over the land: the season when roads closed and people stayed where they were.
Chaturmasya begins: four months in which the tradition asks for restraint rather than expansion. Historically the monsoon retreat, when travel stopped and study deepened.
3 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.
On this day, the tradition says, Vishnu lies down on the serpent Shesha in the ocean of milk and enters yoga nidra, the sleep that is not sleep. He rises four months later, on Prabodhini Ekadashi. The world is not abandoned in these months; it is held from within.
As the Puranas and the Ekadashi tradition keep it.
In the rains the roads turned to mud and rivers rose. Wandering monks stopped wherever they were and stayed until the rains passed, and the villages fed them and learned from them. Hindu sannyasis, Jain monks and Buddhist monks all keep such a rainy season retreat. The months became a season of study.
Chaturmasya, as the traditions keep it.
For weeks before this day, warkaris walk to Pandharpur behind the palanquins of Sant Dnyaneshwar from Alandi and Sant Tukaram from Dehu, singing the abhangas of the saints. They arrive for Ashadhi Ekadashi to see Vitthal, who stands on a brick, waiting for his devotees.
The Wari, as Maharashtra keeps it.
3 days kept as one season. Each has its own page.
Often said
God sleeps, so for four months nothing good can be done.
The root
The sleep is yoga nidra, the stillness that holds the worlds. Janmashtami, Ganesh Chaturthi, Navaratri and Diwali all fall inside these months. Weddings are by custom held after them, but the months themselves are for inward work, not a forbidden time.
Often said
Chaturmas is about hardship and giving things up.
The root
The tradition asks for restraint so that something can deepen: study, prayer, one steady practice. A small vow kept with joy is closer to the spirit than a large one kept in strain.
Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 3.
Choose one verse of the Gita to read slowly each week until Prabodhini Ekadashi, and begin today.
Sing or repeat the name of Vitthal, or of whatever form of the divine is yours, as the warkaris do on the road.
Walk one stretch of your day on foot, in the spirit of those who walk to Pandharpur.
Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.
Pandharpur, Maharashtra
Ashadhi Ekadashi: lakhs of warkaris arrive on foot after the long Wari, and the town fills with the sound of abhangas and cymbals.
Across North India
Devshayani or Harishayani Ekadashi opens Chaturmas: many keep a fast, and weddings are set aside until Prabodhini Ekadashi.
Monasteries and ashrams
Sannyasis begin their Chaturmasya, staying in one place through the rains, teaching and studying.
The day is chosen by the moment the tradition reads its tithi at, and the times are that day's own, computed for this city. A festival-specific puja window is not printed: those rules differ by tradition and await a scholar's review.
The stories, their sources and the regional customs on this page await a scholar's review. The sky and the dates are computed for your city.
