The Sun is in
Tula
The Moon is in
Kanya, in Uttara Phalguni
The Moon wanes towards the new moon of Deepavali. Before the lamps of Lakshmi, the tradition gives this evening to health, and to a lamp for Yama.
What the day is
Dhanvantari, who rose from the churning of the ocean carrying medicine — the day is about health as the first wealth. The metal-buying is a much later graft.
The story
2 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.
11 / 2Dhanvantari rises from the oceanTurn ↻
When the gods and the asuras churned the ocean of milk, among the last to rise was Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods, carrying the pot of amrita. This trayodashi is kept as his day, Dhanvantari Trayodashi, and Dhanteras takes its name from it.
Bhagavata Purana 8.8; the day's name from the living tradition.
22 / 2A lamp for YamaTurn ↻
At dusk a lamp is set outside the door, facing south, the direction of Yama. It is an offering to the lord of dharma, who keeps the measure of every life, made once a year by the whole household together.
The household custom of Yama-dipa, as the tradition keeps it.
Buy gold or new vessels today, or the year will bring loss.
The root
The day belongs to Dhanvantari, the physician of the gods. Buying metal is a later custom of the market. Nothing is lost by not buying; the older keeping is health, your own and someone else's.
How to keep Dhanteras
Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 2.
1
Do one thing for an elder's health today: a walk together, a check-up booked, their medicines sorted.
Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.
The day, for Singapore

Kept on the day its tithi runs at dusk (pradosh).
Tithi
Krishna Dwadashi · until 12:24 PMthen Krishna Trayodashi from 12:24 PM, the tithi this festival keeps
The day is chosen by the moment the tradition reads its tithi at, and the times are that day's own, computed for this city. A festival-specific puja window is not printed: those rules differ by tradition and await a scholar's review.
