The sky that day

The Moon
Shukla Purnima
The Sun is in
Kumbha
The Moon is in
Simha, in Magha

The full Moon that gives the month its name, standing near the star Magha; the cold month of bathing closes in its light.

What the day is

The month of confluence and of the Magha snan — the tradition's deepest bathing month, and the Kumbh's own.

The story

3 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.

1 / 3A month by the confluenceTurn ↻

Through Magha, pilgrims called kalpavasis live in simple tents on the banks of the Sangam at Prayag, bathing at dawn, eating once a day and listening to katha. The full Moon of Magha is the last great bath of that month of living lightly.

Padma Purana, Magha Mahatmya; the kalpavas as the living tradition keeps it.

2 / 3The Ganga in a cobbler's bowlTurn ↻

Guru Ravidas, born on this full Moon, was a cobbler in Kashi. Asked why he did not go to bathe in the Ganga, he said that when the mind is clean, the Ganga is in his own vessel of water. The saying still travels: man changa to kathauti mein Ganga.

As the living tradition keeps it.

3 / 3The pot of amritTurn ↻

When the ocean was churned, the pot of amrit rose from it and gods and asuras fought over it. The tradition tells that drops fell at Prayag, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik, and the Kumbh is kept at those four places.

The churning: Bhagavata Purana, Book 8. The four places: the living tradition.

What is said, and what is so

Often said

Only a bath in a sacred river counts today.

The root

The river is a gift where it is near. Where it is not, cold water at dawn, a sankalp said aloud and a clean mind keep the day fully; Ravidas said as much from his cobbler's bench.

How to keep Magha Purnima

Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 3.

Bathe in cold water at dawn, say a sankalp aloud, and sit in silence for a few minutes after.

Go to the nearest river, lake or tank and clear one stretch of its bank of plastic and waste.

Cook or serve a meal for someone today, as the langar of Ravidas Jayanti does for anyone who comes.

Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.

How India keeps it

  • Prayagraj

The kalpavasis of the Magh Mela take their last great bath at the Sangam and begin the journey home.

  • Varanasi and Punjab

Guru Ravidas Jayanti: kirtan and processions, and pilgrims gather at Seer Goverdhanpur in Varanasi, where he was born.
