Its meaning
Entering the earth, I sustain all beings with My energy; and becoming the moon, full of sap, I nourish all plants.
Bhagavad Gita 15.13

This is the first full Moon after the rains, in the clearest sky of the year, and the tradition says it is the one night the Moon shines with all sixteen of its kalas.
The clearest full moon of the year. The moon is said to pour amrit tonight; rice pudding is left out to take it.
3 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.
On a night of autumn, with jasmine in bloom and the Moon full, Krishna played his flute in Vrindavan, and the gopis left everything and came. They danced in a circle, and each of them found Krishna beside her. The tradition reads it as the soul's call to the divine.
Bhagavata Purana 10.29 to 10.33, the Rasa Panchadhyayi.
On this night, it is said, Lakshmi moves across the earth asking: ko jagarti, who is awake? She comes to the house that is lit, clean and watchful. So the night is called Kojagari.
As the living tradition keeps it.
Valmiki saw a hunter's arrow strike one of a pair of krauncha birds, and his grief came out of him in measured lines: the first shloka. From that sorrow the Ramayana was born. The tradition keeps Valmiki's birth on this full Moon.
Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda; his birth on this day as the tradition keeps it.
5 days kept as one season. Each has its own page.
Fifteen days of water and names for those before us.
1 October 2088Mahalaya Amavasya
The last day of the fortnight: every ancestor remembered, even those whose day is forgotten.
Nine nights, nine forms of the Mother; one practice kept unbroken.
15 October 2088Victory on the tenth; a new learning begun.
24 October 2088The full Moon of autumn; kheer under its light, and the night kept awake.
You are hereOften said
Kheer left in the moonlight becomes a medicine that cures disease.
The root
Kheer is set out under the Moon as an offering and eaten at dawn as prasada, a way of thanking the season for its harvest and its clear sky. No text makes it a cure; for illness, a doctor.
Often said
Staying awake tonight is a way to win wealth.
The root
Lakshmi's question is who is awake, and the tradition reads it as who is watchful: present, clean, honest. The vigil is a wakefulness of attention, not a bargain.
Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 3.
Sit in the moonlight without a screen for as long as you can, and simply look.
Make kheer, set it under the Moon, and share it in the morning with someone beyond your own house.
Read the story of the krauncha birds and Valmiki's first verse, aloud if there is someone to hear it.
Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.
The youngest
Carries the bowl of kheer out under the Moon and finds the Moon's reflection in it.
The eldest
Tells the story of Kojagari or of the Ras in Vrindavan, and stays up a while with the children.
Everyone
Everyone sits outside together under the full Moon, lamps lit, screens away.
Bengal, Odisha and Assam
Kojagari Lakshmi Puja: alpana at the door and on the floor, Lakshmi's footsteps drawn walking into the house.
Odisha
Kumar Purnima: young girls worship the Moon and Kartikeya, play games through the day and sing songs of the full Moon.
Gujarat
Sharad Poonam: garba under the full Moon, and doodh pauva, flattened rice in milk, eaten in the moonlight.
Braj
Vrindavan and its temples keep the night of the Ras: Krishna dressed in white, and the Moon watched from the river.
The day is chosen by the moment the tradition reads its tithi at, and the times are that day's own, computed for this city. A festival-specific puja window is not printed: those rules differ by tradition and await a scholar's review.
