The portal of Festivals
Turn a card. Answer all three rightly and this portal is sealed in your sky. New riddles every morning.
May the Mother walk with you through these nine nights, and may her strength become your gentleness.

When, for Chandigarh
12 October 2083
Shukla Pratipada · until 12:56 PM
Do
Choose one practice and keep it every night of the nine: sit and say the Devi's name, at the same hour, unbroken.
Leave aside
Fasting as a bargain. The nine nights ask for attention, not hunger.
Add your name and send the link. It opens as your wish, with the timing for their own city, the verse, and how to keep the day.
Wishing you a blessed Sharada Navaratri
Every festival on its right day for Chandigarh, inside your phone's own calendar, each one opening its page here. It renews itself every year. No account needed.
For Outlook or any other calendar, add the copied link as a calendar from the internet. For another city, open this page for that city first.
A gentle reminder three days before each festival and on its morning, with its timing for your city.
The Moon is new and begins to wax, the rains have ended and the Sun moves toward the autumn equinox; the nine nights follow the Moon's growing light.
Nine nights of Devi, three each for Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati — the personality rebuilt in three movements: what must be fought, what must be gathered, what must be understood.
4 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.
Mahishasura had driven the gods from heaven. Their anger and their radiance came out of them as one light, and that light took the form of the Devi. Each god gave her his weapon, and she rode out alone and won.
Devi Mahatmya, in the Markandeya Purana, the middle episode.
Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri, Siddhidatri: nine names, one for each night. The daughter of the mountain grows through austerity, courage, creation, motherhood and the fierce night into one who grants every fulfilment.
Devi Kavacha, recited with the Durga Saptashati.
When Shumbha mocked the Devi for fighting with many helpers, she drew all the goddesses back into herself and stood alone. I alone exist in this world, she said; who else is there besides me? Every power he saw had been hers.
Devi Mahatmya, the final episode.
Before the last battle, Rama worshipped Durga out of her usual season, offering a hundred and eight lotuses. One was missing; he moved to offer his own eye, which is called lotus like, and the Devi stopped his hand and blessed him.
Krittivasi Ramayana (Bengali); not in Valmiki.
5 days kept as one season. Each has its own page.
Fifteen days of water and names for those before us.
26 September 2083Mahalaya Amavasya
The last day of the fortnight: every ancestor remembered, even those whose day is forgotten.
Nine nights, nine forms of the Mother; one practice kept unbroken.
You are hereVictory on the tenth; a new learning begun.
20 October 2083The full Moon of autumn; kheer under its light, and the night kept awake.
25 October 2083Often said
The Devi is angry, and must be feared and kept pleased.
The root
The gods' own hymn to her says it plainly: in her heart is compassion, and fierceness only in battle. Her fierce form faces what harms her children, never the children themselves.
Often said
If the nine nights are not kept perfectly, the Devi turns away.
The root
At the close of the Devi Mahatmya she promises to come to those who remember her and hear her story with devotion. Remembrance is the rite; fasting is a discipline some choose, and none is punished for a broken one.
Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 3.
Choose one practice and keep it every night of the nine: sit and say the Devi's name, at the same hour, unbroken.
On the eighth or ninth day, feed young girls a full meal and honour them, as the tradition asks.
Learn one verse of the Devi Mahatmya by heart, with its meaning: ya devi sarvabhuteshu, the Devi who dwells in all beings.
Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.
The youngest
Helps set the lamp or the dolls in place and learns the name of the night's form of the Devi.
The eldest
Reads or tells one episode of the Devi's story aloud, a little each night.
Everyone
On the ninth day the household together feeds and honours young girls of the neighbourhood.
Bengal
Durga Puja: the Devi comes home with her children for the last days, in pandals that fill whole cities, and leaves for Kailasa on the tenth.
Gujarat
Garba each night, danced in circles around the garbo, a clay pot with a lamp inside, the Devi's light at the centre.
Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra
Golu: steps of dolls are set out at home, neighbours visit, and the last days honour Saraswati and the tools of work.
Mysuru, Karnataka
Dasara is kept for Chamundeshwari, who slew Mahishasura on the hill above the city; the palace is lit every night.
The day is chosen by the moment the tradition reads its tithi at, and the times are that day's own, computed for this city. A festival-specific puja window is not printed: those rules differ by tradition and await a scholar's review.
The stories, their sources and the regional customs on this page await a scholar's review. The sky and the dates are computed for your city.
