The bright half of Magha is five days old and the Moon is waxing, while the Sun leaves the deepest cold behind and the first mustard yellow opens in the fields.

What the day is

Saraswati's day, and spring's first. Traditionally the day a child is taught their first letter.

The story

2 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.

1 / 2The river that became speechTurn ↻

In the Rigveda, Saraswati is a mighty river and also the one who purifies, who awakens true words and kindles good thought. A river that nourished the land became the goddess of all that flows in the mind: speech, learning, music.

Rigveda 1.3, and many hymns to Saraswati across the Rigveda.

2 / 2A silent world given voiceTurn ↻

The tradition tells that when the world was first made, it was complete and silent. Saraswati appeared with the veena, and at its sound the waters murmured, the wind found its voice and the birds began to sing. Spring begins on her day because the world began to speak on it.

As the living tradition keeps it.

What is said, and what is so

Often said

A child slow to learn needs a special puja bought for them.

The root

Saraswati is honoured by learning itself: a book opened, a note practised, a question asked with patience. Nothing is bought; a little practice each day is her worship.

How to keep Vasant Panchami

Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 2.

Teach a child one letter, one word or one line; or begin learning something you are bad at.

Learn the Saraswati vandana, Ya kundendu tushara hara dhavala, and say it once with its meaning.

Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.

The family's part

The youngest

Writes their first letter, or their best one, and places a book or an instrument before the goddess.

The eldest

Teaches the children one thing they know by heart: a verse, a song, a rhyme from their own childhood.

Everyone

Wear something yellow and share a sweet coloured with saffron, the colour of the mustard in flower.

How India keeps it

  • Bengal

Saraswati Puja: students lay their books and instruments before the goddess and do not study that day; small children are given their first letters, hate khori.

  • Telangana

At the Gnana Saraswati temple in Basara, families bring young children for aksharabhyasam, the first writing of letters.

  • Punjab

Basant: yellow clothes, yellow rice and kites over the fields of mustard.

  • Delhi

At the dargah of Nizamuddin Auliya, Sufi Basant is kept with yellow flowers and the songs of Amir Khusrau.
