न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन् नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे
na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin nāyaṁ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ / ajo nityaḥ śāśvato 'yaṁ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre
Its meaning
It is never born, nor does it ever die; having come to be, it will not again cease to be. Unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient, it is not slain when the body is slain.
Bhagavad Gita 2.20

A gentle reminder three days before each festival and on its morning, with its timing for your city.
The full Moon of Jyeshtha, in the fiercest heat of the year, when the shade of an old banyan is the kindest thing on the road.
Savitri argues with Yama for her husband's life and wins — by argument, not by pleading. The banyan is worshipped because it outlives everyone who sits under it.
3 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.
King Ashvapati sent his daughter Savitri to find her own husband. She chose Satyavan, son of a blind king living in exile in the forest. The sage Narada warned that Satyavan had one year to live. Savitri did not change her choice: she had chosen once, she said, and would not choose twice.
Mahabharata, Aranyaka Parva, the story of Savitri.
On the day foretold, Satyavan fell in the forest and Yama came for him. Savitri followed. She spoke to Yama of dharma, of friendship with the good, of what makes a life worthy, so wisely that he offered her boon after boon. Her last asked for children with Satyavan, and Yama, bound by his own word, gave Satyavan back.
Mahabharata, Aranyaka Parva, the story of Savitri.
The tradition tells that Satyavan lay in the shade of a banyan while Savitri spoke with Yama. The banyan drops new roots from its branches and lives for centuries; it is the image of a life that keeps finding new ground. Women circle it, tie a thread around it and offer water.
The banyan: as the living tradition keeps it.
Often said
If the vrat is not kept, harm comes to the husband.
The root
Nothing in the story threatens anyone. Savitri won by wisdom, courage and love, and the day honours those. It is kept out of love, and no home is in danger for keeping it simply or not at all.
Often said
Savitri is a model of meekness.
The root
She chose her own husband, held to her choice against a sage's warning, walked after Death himself and out-argued him. She is the tradition's image of a woman who will not accept an ending as final.
Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 3.
Plant a young banyan or pipal where it has room to grow, or adopt a young tree near you and water it through the summer.
Read the story of Savitri aloud, and notice where she wins by speaking well rather than by pleading.
Ask an elder woman in your family how she kept this day, and what Savitri meant to her.
Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.
The youngest
Pours water at the root of the tree and helps wind the thread around it.
The eldest
Tells the story of Savitri walking with Yama, in their own words.
Everyone
Sit together in the shade of a tree and let each person name one thing they would never give up on.
Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and much of the north
The day is kept on the new Moon of Jyeshtha as Vat Savitri Amavasya, with worship at the banyan.
Maharashtra, Gujarat and Karnataka
It is Vat Purnima, kept on the full Moon: women gather at the banyan, tie threads and circle the tree.
Odisha
Savitri Brata is kept on the new Moon, with the story of Savitri read aloud at home.
The day is chosen by the moment the tradition reads its tithi at, and the times are that day's own, computed for this city. A festival-specific puja window is not printed: those rules differ by tradition and await a scholar's review.
The stories, their sources and the regional customs on this page await a scholar's review. The sky and the dates are computed for your city.
