The portal of Festivals
Turn a card. Answer all three rightly and this portal is sealed in your sky. New riddles every morning.
May this full moon find you a little quieter, a little kinder, and a little freer of what troubles you.

Its meaning
One whose mind is not shaken in sorrows, who has no longing for pleasures, from whom attachment, fear and anger have gone, is called a sage of steady mind.

When, for Delhi
24 May 2089
Shukla Purnima · until 3:49 PM
Do
Sit at dawn for as long as you honestly can, eyes closed, simply watching the breath come and go.
Leave aside
Arguing over whose teacher he was. The full moon belongs to everyone who looks up.
Add your name. The card goes as a picture they can read and keep, and the link with it opens as your wish, with the timing for their own city, the verse, and how to keep the day.
Wishing you a blessed Buddha Purnima
Every festival on its right day for Delhi, inside your phone's own calendar, each one opening its page here. It renews itself every year. No account needed.

A gentle reminder three days before each festival and on its morning, with its timing for your city.
The full Moon of Vaishakha, the first great full Moon of summer: Buddhist tradition holds that the Buddha was born, awakened and passed beneath this same Moon.
Birth, awakening and parinirvana on one full moon. The Buddha is not outside this tradition — he is its most rigorous internal critic, and the tradition kept him.
4 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.
Siddhartha was born to Queen Maya in the grove of Lumbini, on her way to her father's house, and grew up as a prince of the Shakyas at Kapilavastu. He had every comfort, and at twenty nine he left all of it to find out why people suffer and whether suffering can end.
The Buddhist accounts of his life, as the tradition keeps them.
After years of harsh austerity that nearly killed him, he took food, sat beneath a pipal tree at Bodh Gaya and resolved not to rise until he understood. Under the full Moon he awakened. The tree is still honoured as the Bodhi tree, the tree of awakening.
The Buddhist tradition; Bodh Gaya, Bihar.
At eighty, at Kushinagara, he lay down between two sal trees and told his disciples not to grieve: all that is made passes away; work out your freedom with diligence. He asked them to be a lamp to themselves.
Mahaparinibbana Sutta, Digha Nikaya 16.
The Bhagavata Purana names the Buddha among the forms of Vishnu, and Jayadeva's hymn of the ten avatars praises him for his compassion, for the heart that would not let animals be killed in sacrifice. Hindus and Buddhists remember him differently, and both remember him with reverence.
Bhagavata Purana 1.3; Jayadeva, Gita Govinda, the Dashavatara hymn.
Often said
The Buddha taught that life is only misery.
The root
He began with suffering the way a physician begins with the illness. The third of his four truths is that suffering can end, and the fourth is the way to end it. The teaching is a cure, not a lament.
Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 3.
Sit at dawn for as long as you honestly can, eyes closed, simply watching the breath come and go.
Set out a shallow bowl of clean water for birds in the heat, and keep it filled through the summer.
Read the account of the Buddha's last days, and stay a while with his words: be a lamp to yourself.
Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.
The youngest
Fills the bowl of water for the birds and watches who comes to drink.
The eldest
Tells the story of the prince who left the palace to understand why people suffer.
Everyone
Eat one simple meal together tonight, and let each person name one creature they will be gentle with.
Bodh Gaya and Sarnath
Pilgrims from across Asia gather at the Mahabodhi temple and the Deer Park, chanting and sitting in silence through the day.
Sri Lanka
The day is Vesak: lanterns hang in every street, and roadside stalls give away food and drink to anyone who passes.
Sikkim and Ladakh
The month is kept as Saga Dawa, the holy month of the Buddha's deeds, with processions of the sacred texts and prayer at the monasteries.
The day is chosen by the moment the tradition reads its tithi at, and the times are that day's own, computed for this city. A festival-specific puja window is not printed: those rules differ by tradition and await a scholar's review.
The stories, their sources and the regional customs on this page await a scholar's review. The sky and the dates are computed for your city.
