May the Mother's strength rise in you over these nine days, as it rose before the gods who thought the strength was theirs.

Shukla Pratipada · until 12:23 PM
Do
Choose one small discipline for all nine days, such as sitting quietly at dawn for ten minutes, and keep it.
Leave aside
Fasting as a bargain. What the nine days ask is attention, not hunger.
Add your name. The card goes as a picture they can read and keep, and the link with it opens as your wish, with the timing for their own city, the verse, and how to keep the day.

The Moon waxes from its first sliver to its ninth day in the month that opens the year, as the spring grows warm; nine nights of Devi are kept while the light increases.
Nine nights of Devi at the year's opening — the spring counterpart to Sharada Navaratri, quieter and more interior. Rebuilding the personality before the year loads it.
3 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.
Suratha, a king who has lost his kingdom, and Samadhi, a merchant cast out by his own family, meet in the forest hermitage of the rishi Medhas. Both still grieve for what rejected them. The rishi's answer to their question is the whole of the Devi Mahatmya: the power that binds us to sorrow is the same power that, worshipped, sets us free.
Markandeya Purana, Devi Mahatmya, the first chapter.
When Mahishasura could not be met by any one god, the radiance of all of them came together and took form as the Devi. Each gave her a weapon, the mountain gave her the lion, and she went out alone to face what none of them could face alone.
Markandeya Purana, Devi Mahatmya, the second chapter.
The gods praise her as the one who dwells in every being as consciousness, as intelligence, as sleep and hunger, as patience, modesty, faith, compassion and contentment, as power and as mother. The hymn does not place the goddess far away. It finds her in the ordinary faculties of every person.
Markandeya Purana, Devi Mahatmya, the fifth chapter.
4 days kept as one season. Each has its own page.
The year begins: the gudi raised, bitter and sweet together.
13 April 2097Nine spring nights of the Devi, one discipline kept.
You are hereRama born at noon; the promise kept at its cost.
20 April 2097The first full Moon; strength remembered and given away.
26 April 2097Often said
If the nine days are broken, the goddess is angered.
The root
The Devi of the Mahatmya is the Mother who protects those who call on her. A discipline missed is simply begun again the next morning. Devotion is measured by return, not by an unbroken record.
Often said
Navaratri is kept only by fasting.
The root
Many keep a fast, and it is a real practice. But the core of the nine days in the texts is the worship itself: the kalash, the lamp, the recitation, the honouring of girls and women. Each keeps the nine days in the form their body and life allow.
Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 3.
Choose one small discipline for all nine days, such as sitting quietly at dawn for ten minutes, and keep it.
Learn by heart one verse of the hymn Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu, and say it each morning of the nine days.
On one of the nine days, prepare a meal and serve it with respect to someone who cooks for others all year.
Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.
The youngest
Waters the barley sown in the earthen pot each morning and watches the green rise through the nine days.
The eldest
Leads the recitation, or tells one story of the Devi in their own words each evening.
Everyone
On the eighth or ninth day, the girls of the house are honoured, fed first and given a gift, as the Devi herself.
North India
A kalash is set up on the first morning and barley is sown beside it; on the eighth or ninth day young girls are worshipped and fed as the Devi.
Jammu and the hills

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Many homes across India
The Durga Saptashati is recited over the nine days, often in portions, by a family together.
The day is chosen by the moment the tradition reads its tithi at, and the times are that day's own, computed for this city. A festival-specific puja window is not printed: those rules differ by tradition and await a scholar's review.
