The Moon is eleven days into the bright half of Margashirsha, the month Krishna names as himself among the months.

What the day is

The day the Gita was spoken — on a battlefield, to a man who could not stand up.

The story

3 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.

1 / 3A man who could not standTurn ↻

At Kurukshetra, between two armies, Arjuna saw his teachers and kinsmen across the field, set down his bow and sat in the chariot, unable to fight. Krishna, his charioteer, did not leave him there. What he said in that hour is the Bhagavad Gita.

Bhagavad Gita, chapters 1 and 2; Mahabharata, Bhishma Parva.

2 / 3Act, and release the fruitTurn ↻

The teaching that begins in the second chapter is simple to say and long to live: your right is to the act, never to its fruit. Do the work fully, with steadiness in success and failure, and let the outcome go.

Bhagavad Gita 2.47 and 2.48.

3 / 3Sanjaya sees it allTurn ↻

The Gita reaches us through Sanjaya, given the sight to see the distant field by Vyasa, describing to the blind king Dhritarashtra all that Krishna said. Its last verse is his: where Krishna and Arjuna stand together, there are fortune, victory and steady right.

Mahabharata, Bhishma Parva; Bhagavad Gita 18.78.

What is said, and what is so

Often said

The Gita is for old age or for renunciants.

The root

It was spoken to a householder and a warrior in the middle of his life, at the hardest hour of it. It is a teaching for action, for anyone with work to do.

Often said

The Gita teaches that fighting is always right.

The root

Arjuna's duty was his own, in his own war. What the Gita asks of everyone is to act without hatred: it praises the one who bears ill will to no being.

How to keep Gita Jayanti

Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 3.

Read the second chapter of the Gita slowly, and stop at the one verse that speaks to your own work.

Learn verse 2.47 by heart, with its meaning, and say it once before your next task.

Teach one verse of the Gita, and what it means to you, to a child or a friend.

Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.

The family's part

The youngest

Learns one short verse and says it aloud to the family.

The eldest

Tells what the Gita meant to them at a hard turn in their own life.

Everyone

Read the second chapter together, each person reading a few verses in turn.

How India keeps it

  • Kurukshetra, Haryana

At Jyotisar, where the tradition says the Gita was spoken, and at Brahma Sarovar, the Gita Mahotsav gathers readers, singers and lamps.

  • Temples and homes across India

All eighteen chapters are recited in one sitting, and the day is kept also as Mokshada Ekadashi, with fasting by those who keep it.

  • Schools and study circles

Children recite chapters in competitions, and study groups read the Gita together through the day.
