The sky that day

The Moon
Shukla Purnima
The Sun is in
Mithuna
The Moon is in
Dhanu, in Mula

The full Moon of Ashadha, the first full Moon of the rains: the season of staying put, which is why it has always been the season of learning.

What the day is

For Vyasa, and for every teacher since. The full moon of the month that turns toward learning.

The story

4 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.

1 / 4Vyasa, who arranged the VedaTurn ↻

Krishna Dvaipayana, born on an island to Satyavati and the sage Parashara, gathered the Veda and arranged it into four so that it could be learned and kept. He composed the Mahabharata, and the tradition remembers him as the teacher of teachers. This full Moon is also called Vyasa Purnima.

Mahabharata, Adi Parva; Vishnu Purana.

2 / 4The young teacher who speaks in silenceTurn ↻

Under a banyan sits Dakshinamurti, Shiva as the teacher: the guru is young, the disciples are old, and the teaching is silence, yet every doubt of the disciples dissolves. The highest teaching is given by presence, not by words.

The Dakshinamurti dhyana verses, as recited in the tradition.

3 / 4The first sermon at SarnathTurn ↻

On the full Moon of Ashadha, Buddhist tradition holds, the newly awakened Buddha gave his first teaching to five companions in the Deer Park at Sarnath, setting the wheel of the teaching in motion.

Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, Samyutta Nikaya.

4 / 4Let the teacher be a god to youTurn ↻

When the students of the Vedic school leave, the teacher gives them a parting charge: speak the truth, follow dharma, do not neglect study; let mother, father, teacher and guest be as gods to you.

Taittiriya Upanishad 1.11.

The days around it

    5 July 2093
  2. Guru Purnima

Vyasa's full Moon; every teacher is remembered.

    You are here
  3. Prabodhini Ekadashi

Vishnu wakes; the four months close; the tulsi is wed.

    30 October 2093

What is said, and what is so

Often said

A guru is to be obeyed without a question.

The root

Krishna tells Arjuna to learn from the wise by humility, by questioning and by service. The Gita is itself one long question answered. The true teacher welcomes the question; it is how the student grows.

How to keep Guru Purnima

Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 3.

Write to a teacher who changed you, and say specifically what changed. If they have passed, write it anyway and keep it.

Teach one thing you know to someone who cannot repay you.

Learn the verse that begins Gurur Brahma, and understand each line before you recite it.

Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.

The family's part

The youngest

Makes a card for a teacher at school and says thank you in their own words.

The eldest

Tells the family about a teacher who shaped their life, and what that teacher said.

Everyone

Each person names one thing they learned this year and who they learned it from.

How India keeps it

  • Ashrams and mathas

Disciples gather for the worship of the guru and of Vyasa, and the rainy season retreat of the sannyasis formally begins.

  • Music and dance traditions

Students honour their gurus and ustads, often by performing before them, offering what they have been taught.

  • Nepal

The day is kept as a day for teachers, with students honouring them in schools.

  • Buddhist communities

The same full Moon is Asalha Puja, remembering the first sermon at Sarnath.
