A gentle reminder three days before each festival and on its morning, with its timing for your city.
The fourteenth night of the waning Moon, the last thin sliver before the new Moon as winter ends; the night is almost dark, and it is kept awake through its middle hour.
The great night. Not a celebration — a vigil. The one festival whose entire practice is to stay awake, which is also its whole meaning.
3 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.
Brahma and Vishnu argued over which of them was greater, and between them rose a pillar of fire with no beginning and no end. Vishnu became a boar and dug down; Brahma became a swan and flew up; neither found its edge. Shiva stepped out of the light, and the argument ended in reverence.
Shiva Purana, Vidyeshvara Samhita; Linga Purana.
A hunter climbed a bilva tree at night to wait for prey, hungry and sleepless. Without knowing it, he let leaves and drops of water fall on a linga below. Deer came, one by one, and each asked to go home first and return; he let them go, and at dawn they all came back. He could not kill them, and the night's wakefulness opened his heart to Shiva.
Shiva Purana, Koti Rudra Samhita.
Parvati's tapas won Shiva, the ascetic who had turned from the world. The tradition keeps this night as their wedding, and in many places Shiva's wedding procession is taken through the streets.
The marriage: Shiva Purana, Rudra Samhita. The night: the living tradition.
Often said
Only those who fast have truly kept the night.
The root
The hunter fasted without meaning to; what changed him was a night awake and a heart that spared. Waking, attention and the name are the vigil; fasting is a personal choice, never its measure.
Often said
Bhang is Shiva's prasad and part of the worship.
The root
No text makes intoxication part of the rite. The vigil asks for a clear mind through the night, and water, milk and bilva are the offering.
Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 3.
In each watch of the night, sit for a while and chant Om slowly, letting the sound fall back into silence.
Repeat Om Namah Shivaya, the five syllables, through the middle hour of the night.
Keep one full hour of the night in silence: no screen, no speech, only the dark and your own breath.
Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.
The youngest
Stays awake for the first watch and offers water and a bilva leaf with their own hands.
The eldest
Tells the story of the hunter in the bilva tree and the deer who kept their word.
Everyone
Sit together in the dark around one lamp, and let the house be quiet for a while.
Kashmir
Kashmiri Pandits keep Herath: a pot of water and walnuts is worshipped as Shiva and his family, and the walnuts are shared after.
Varanasi
Kashi Vishwanath is open through the night, and Shiva's wedding procession moves through the lanes.
Mandi, Himachal Pradesh
The Shivaratri fair: village deities are carried down from the hills in palanquins to greet Shiva.
Nepal
Sadhus and pilgrims gather at Pashupatinath in Kathmandu, and fires burn through the night.
Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu
Natyanjali: dancers offer their art before Nataraja, Shiva as the lord of dance.
Kept on the day its tithi runs at midnight (nishita).
The day is chosen by the moment the tradition reads its tithi at, and the times are that day's own, computed for this city. A festival-specific puja window is not printed: those rules differ by tradition and await a scholar's review.
The stories, their sources and the regional customs on this page await a scholar's review. The sky and the dates are computed for your city.
