The Sun is in

The Moon is in
Meena, in Uttara Bhadrapada

The Moon is eleven days past new in Kartika, the month the tradition holds dearest to Vishnu, and the rains that opened the four months have long withdrawn.

What the day is

Chaturmasya ends. The four months of restraint close and the world resumes — marriages, journeys, beginnings.

The story

3 stories the day keeps. Turn each card.

1 / 3Vishnu wakesTurn ↻

On Devshayani Ekadashi Vishnu lies down on the serpent Shesha upon the ocean, in the sleep that is called yoga nidra. Four months later, on this Ekadashi, he wakes. Prabodhini means the awakening, and in the Hindi lands the day is simply Dev Uthani, the day the god rises.

Padma Purana, Ekadashi mahatmya; the living tradition.

2 / 3Chaturmas endsTurn ↻

For the four months of the rains, monks stayed in one place and households kept a quieter rhythm: vows taken, journeys put off, weddings waiting. With the waking of Vishnu the season closes, and the world resumes its beginnings.

Skanda Purana; the living tradition of Chaturmas.

3 / 3Tulsi is wedTurn ↻

Vrinda, a woman of unbending devotion, is said to have become the tulsi plant, and Vishnu, as the Shaligram stone, is wed to her every year. On this day or the next, households dress the tulsi as a bride and hold her wedding in the courtyard, and with it the season of weddings opens.

Padma Purana; Tulsi Vivah as the living tradition keeps it.

The days around it

2 days kept as one season. Each has its own page.

  1. Prabodhini Ekadashi

Vishnu wakes; the four months close; the tulsi is wed.

  2. Kartik Purnima · Dev Deepawali

Dev Deepavali at Kashi; Guru Nanak's birth; lamps on the river.

What is said, and what is so

Often said

Anything begun during Chaturmas is bound to fail.

The root

The four months were a season for staying, listening and inward practice, kept when the rains made roads hard and life slowed. They were a time for depth, not a curse on what is begun.

Often said

While Vishnu sleeps, the world is left unguarded.

The root

His sleep is yoga nidra, rest held inside full awareness. The image is of one who rests without ever letting go; the waking is a celebration, not a rescue.

How to keep Prabodhini Ekadashi

Free acts, done by you. Kept so far this year: 0 of 3.

Plant a tulsi, or a tree, and give it water this morning as the household gives water to the tulsi.

Rise before dawn, as the god is woken, and sit for ten minutes before the day begins.

Say the name of Vishnu, or the name you hold dearest, one hundred and eight times, slowly.

Each act is free and done by you. Keeping one writes it to your karma ledger with the day's panchang. Nothing here is ever bought, and no act is a remedy.

The family's part

The youngest

Decorates the tulsi with a red cloth and flowers for her wedding.

The eldest

Leads the song that wakes the god, as it was sung in their own home.

Everyone

Each person names one thing they set down four months ago and whether they will take it up again.

How India keeps it

  • The Hindi heartland

As Dev Uthani, women draw the god's feet in rice paste, sing him awake, and raise a canopy of sugarcane for the tulsi's wedding.

  • Pandharpur, Maharashtra

Kartiki Ekadashi brings the warkaris to Vitthal a second time in the year, after the great Ashadhi wari.

  • Across India

The day opens the season of weddings, and many families fix their dates from it.
