Graha means one who seizes — a force that takes hold of the mind and of events. Jyotisha counts nine: the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, and two shadow-points, Rahu and Ketu.

Rahu and Ketu are not bodies at all. They are the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's — which is exactly why eclipses happen there. Uranus, Neptune and Pluto are not part of classical Jyotisha.

Every graha is a karaka — a signifier — and the same graha is the lord of a dasha, a period of your life. The table below is the alphabet the rest of this course is written in.
